The first landing on the island occurred in 1946, when Franco-Dutch adventurer Rémy de Haenen touched down on a savannah, which would later become the airport. Initially named Saint-Jean-Gustave-III upon its inauguration in 1984, it was renamed Rémy de Haenen in 2015.

Pilots need special training to land in St-Barths, as the approach involves flying 30 meters (100 feet) above a hill, followed by a sharp descent to land.
